Bond Books in Progress

Soon to release

Purpose of Fathers & Sons series: To strengthen and equip young men: to own the covenant early; to love and adore Christ; to believe like men; to worship like men; to serve like men; to lead like men; to take responsibility like men; to proclaim like men; to hate the world; to take every thought captive to Christ; to demolish arguments; to understand the culture; to strengthen the faith and love of fathers and sons, and to promote Christian leadership and maturity in young men...     "Already well established in historical fiction for young people, Douglas Bond now offers a more direct and vital message for young men and their fathers. With ample story-telling ability, he warns them of the pitfalls and opportunities of youth in a debased culture. The result is a first-class textbook on modern culture, with much wise and challenging counsel for young men and their fathers." Russ Pulliam, The Indianapolis Star Home

NEW BOOK! A historical novel for mature readers of all ages on the life of John Calvin. Happy day! August 1, 08. I met my deadline! Writing is complete! To release well before Calvin's 500th Birthday, July 10, 2009! "The earth sustains on her bosom many monster minds, minds which are not afraid to employ the seed of Deity deposited in human nature as a means of suppressing the name of God. Can anything be more detestable than this madness in man, who, finding God a hundred times both in his body and his soul, makes his excellence in this respect a pretext for denying that there is a God? He will not say that chance has made him different from the brutes; . . . but, substituting Nature as the architect of the universe, he suppresses the name of God." John Calvin 1509-1564. On a lighter note about monsters and brutes: "Calvin's rambunctious namesake in the 'Calvin and Hobbes' comic strip bears no similarity to the religious reformer. However, creator Bill Watterson has hinted at a similarity: 'I wouldn't want Calvin in my house, but on paper, he helps me sort through my life and understand it.'"

Read a chapter of Bond's CALVIN novel

Former student of mine, and writer in her own right, read and commented on this manuscript: "Mr. Bond, What an accomplishment! Your portrayal of Calvin--through the eyes of Jean-Louis--is sobering and heartfelt and impossible to forget. Even those with little prior knowledge of this church forefather will be hard-pressed to set this book down. The narrative is lively, the action engaging, and the historical scope you give the reader is compelling. I was convicted by how selfless Calvin was in everything--refusing his earthly goods, trusting God to sustain him through tragedy, and forgiving his betrayer in the end. You forget how mature Calvin was as well; I was amazed that he was delivering the "grace alone" message in his twenties... Alisa T."

JOB'S HARD JOB

**********Is a children's picture book in verse that features highlights from the difficult task God called Job to endure, recorded in the Book of Job in the Bible. Below are Peter Orr's prototype illustration for the story. This manuscript currently is under serious consideration by a publisher, with several very encouraging exchanges about the book. I've been told to expect a letter of intent sometime and a contract sometime thereafter. I'm not holding my breath!**********

    It begins:

Once upon a time there was

                                A blameless man from Uz,

An upright, wealthy man called Job,

Who wore a turban and a robe.

Of all the men of the east

This Job was far from the least...

For some time, ideas have been astir for another historical fiction series, this one tracing the trials and triumphs of the Huguenots, the French Calvinists. First volume set in 16th century Paris, culminating in the St. Bartholomew's Massacre; the second during the struggles for toleration, culminating in the Edict of Nantes, 1598; the third, culminating in the revocation of toleration by Louis XIV in 1685; companion volumes tracing flight to America and England. Some of this series will likely be set in the coastal city of Rouen where the River Seine empties into the Atlantic and where many French Protestants lived before the renewal of persecution. Pictured: some of the author's students (April, 2004) before the north door of the grand cathedral in that city; the Gothic crossing; and a scene from the medieval streets of Rouen (the car is later vintage, but un-charred because taken before the riots of '05).

Mid-July 2005, the author took Dr. Peter and Mrs. Jones (ne: Rebecca Clowney, daughter of the late Edmund Clowney, long-time president of Westminster Seminary) sailing in Gig Harbor, Washington. The Joneses lived for eighteen years in Aix-en-Provence, where Dr. Jones taught at the Reformed Seminary there. We talked a good deal about this series. The author is inclined to defer this series to author, Rebecca Jones, an expert on French Huguenot history, though I'm still intrigued by the idea of writing a series like the Crown and Covenant one but set among these persecuted French Christians (especially after the less-than-flattering way the French come off in the Guns of Thunder tale). Rebecca recently emailed me to defer the series back to me. So....

My daughter Brittany spent the school year 07-08 studying French at the language institute connected to the University of Paul Cezanne in Aix-en-Provence. I'm trying to pursued her to tackle this series. She could do it but needs some nudging. Email to put pressure on her!
